The word diabetes is taken from the Greek word diabainein which literally means ?passing through.? This is in direct reference to excessive urination, a major symptom of diabetes. Mellitus, on the other hand, is from the Greek word mel meaning ?honey? and was added to diabetes when Thomas Willis noted that a diabetic?s blood and urine has a sweet taste as a result of too much sugar in both.

Diabetes mellitus is a medical disorder that is characterized by persistent high blood sugar levels as a result of defective insulin secretion. Diabetes is further classified into two forms, type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Both types can be treated through medicine or lifestyle changes. The main risks that come with having diabetes are cardiovascular diseases, chronic renal failure, retinal damage, nerve damage, and gangrene.

Formerly known as juvenile onset diabetes, diabetes mellitus type 1 is marked by a decrease or the absence of insulin production in the body. This is commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents and leads to absolute insulin deficiency. When diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus type 1, the body destroys its beta cells in the pancreas, which, in turn, reduces insulin production.

Diabetes mellitus type 1 is treated with insulin shots and lifestyle adjustments. Blood glucose levels must also be monitored carefully using blood test kits that may be used at home. Insulin may also be administered using insulin pumps that allow insulin infusion 24 hours a day in optimum levels.

Adult onset diabetes, or diabetes mellitus type 2 is more common than diabetes mellitus type 2 and is characterized by the body’s resistance to insulin. The symptoms related to type 2 diabetes may go unnoticed for years because they are quite mild and occur irregularly. Although type 2 diabetes is more complicated than type 1 diabetes, it is easier to treat. Type 2 diabetes may be managed by proper diet, weight reduction, proper exercise, and oral medication.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the person capacity to make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that permits blood sugar or glucose to enter body cells. Because of diabetes much of the glucose remains in the blood of a person. The high blood sugar levels are harmful for your eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart and blood vessels.

The common symptoms of diabetes are too much urination or polyuria, excessive thirst or polydipsia, loss of weight, excessive starvation, nausea, extreme tiredness, infections, irritability and tiredness.

There are three major types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus.

In type-1, the beta cells that make insulin are damaged and various environmental factors like eating habits or viruses results in causing type-1 Diabetes. People with type-1 diabetes take insulin injections and follows a careful diet. Type 2 is most common type of diabetes that affects nearly 75-85% of people. The main cause behind such type of diabetes is heredity and other factors include obesity, high blood pressure and lack of proper diet. It can be controlled with the help of regular exercise, taking proper diet. The third type is GDM and its main causes are heredity, increased maternal age, fatness etc. It increases the chances for mother to develop permanent diabetes and sometimes the child also develops diabetes in later age.

Diabetes is a deadly disease, which has no cure but you can control your diabetes. There are many different ways by which you can control your diabetic levels. You will maintain proper level of your blood glucose with regular exercise, regular check-ups from your doctor and taking proper diet. Sometime oral medications like sulfonylurea drugs, meglitinides and thiazolidinediones also help type-2 diabetes patient to put control over problem. But these medications are not a cure for all type of diabetes; you have to follow other treatments also.

Before we start discussion about type of diabetes we must know what exactly is diabetes? Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism—the digestion system of our body for growth and energy. Almost every food we eat broken down to glucose, the form or sugar which is the fuel for our body. After digestion, glucose passes into the bloodstream, where it is used by cells for growth and energy. For glucose to get into cells, insulin must be present. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach.

When we eat, the pancreas automatically produces the right amount of insulin to move glucose from blood into our cells. For the people having diabetes this is the place of disorder, there pancreas either produces little or no insulin, or the cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced.

Type 1 Diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent diabetes)

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease results when the body’s system for fighting infection stops in a part of body. In diabetes, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and destroys them. The pancreas then produces little or no insulin. A person who has type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to live.

Type 2 Diabetes (previously known as non-insulin dependent diabetes)

The most common form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes. Nearly 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. This form of diabetes is strongly genetic. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in children and adolescents. However, type 2 diabetes in youth are not in common. When type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the pancreas is usually producing enough insulin, but for unknown reasons, the body cannot use the insulin effectively, a condition called insulin resistance. After several years, insulin production decreases. The result is the same as for type 1 diabetes—glucose builds up in the blood and the body cannot make efficient use of its main source of fuel. Gestational Diabetes: (Gdm)Gestational diabetes develops only during pregnancy. Like type 2 diabetes, it occurs more often in African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, and among women with a family history of diabetes. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 20 to 50 percent chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10 years.

Researchers have found that certain herbal products, vitamins and minerals can help in the treatment of diabetes. These products are commonly known as diabetes supplements. Many diabetes supplements assist in controlling diabetes by controlling blood glucose levels. Using them in conjunction with exercise and sensible eating is the best alternative treatment for type II diabetes. That is why they have become so popular these days.

Most diabetes supplements are natural products obtained from herbs. They commonly have no side effects. Diabetes supplements are also nutritional supplements having all natural ingredients needed for normal growth and well being. They can be used in conjunction with medication. Diabetes supplements should be taken after consulting a physician, as some medicines may produce complex reactions.

Most diabetes supplements are effective in treating the illness, but at very slow pace. At least 6 months is needed to determine if a particular supplement is effective. These supplements have to be taken in recommended quantities as prescribed by diabetes supplement companies. Diabetes supplements often don?t require a prescription, but it is better to consult a doctor before taking them.

Diabetes supplements control diabetes by keeping a nutritional balance. They contain essential dietary ingredients such as carbohydrates, vitamins and recommended minerals such as magnesium and vanadium. Herbs used as diabetes supplements include gymnema, fenugreek, cayenne, dandelion, kidney beans, bitter melon, bilberry and ginseng. Diabetes supplements come in liquid, pills and syrup forms. Today, there are a number of diabetes supplements available.

Diabetes supplements treat the disease in different ways. Most of them simulate natural insulin production, some reduce nerve damage, others heal wounds, enhance liver function, while some others boost the immune system of the body. Some supplements such as cayenne and licorice root increase blood circulation through narrowed blood vessels.

The following article on diabetes is appropriate for all, no matter what age. Diabetes is a serious disease. But the startling truth is that diabetes is reversible. Diabetes is the number one cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This disease is a condition where the body is unable to automatically regulate blood glucose levels, resulting in too much glucose (a sugar) in the blood. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects as many as 16 million Americans.

Diabetes is divided into two major groups. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common childhood diseases. Type 1 Diabetes is called Juvenile Diabetes as the onset of it begins in childhood. Type 2 diabetes is most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. They concluded that most cases of type 2 diabetes is preventable by choosing a healthier lifestyle. The problem, in a nutshell, is that type 2 diabetes is not a simple disease caused by a single gene. The best way to control type 2 diabetes is with diet and exercise.

There has been a great deal of buzz about stem cell research and diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes is more common than Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. Conditions associated with type 2 diabetes include hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Type 2 diabetes may account for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Up to two-thirds of people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms. Obesity is the single most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes. An estimated 20% of all cases of new onset type 2 diabetes are in individuals between the ages of 9-19. The more you know about type 2 diabetes, the more you’ll be able to take the right steps to take control of your condition.

What is the relationship between insulin resistance and diabetes. Insulin resistance can occur long before the onset of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is an important marker of diabetes risk. You can counter insulin resistance through modest weight loss and exercise. It is now generally accepted that insulin resistance and ß-cell dysfunction are major factors involved in the development of diabetes. Some scientists think a defect in specific genes may cause insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, renal failure, and amputation in the United States. Diabetes is divided into two major groups. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common childhood diseases. Type 2 diabetes is most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. Diabetes is a growing global problem of devastating social and economic impact. But the startling truth is that diabetes is reversible. The first step in managing diabetes is to commit yourself to the care of a health professional.
